Course Content: 6 Steps to Critical Thinking and Problem Solving

Do you feel like the problems you're trying to solve are more difficult than the ones you faced in the past. You're right - they are.

Our workshop starts with an examination of the current problem-solving context. Here we help you understand the Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous (VUCA) nature of the problems facing you today. We also describe the 13 reasoning skills we all have in varying amounts.

We then built the course around a proven 6-step framework that will guide you through the critical thinking and problem-solving process:

Define and Analyse the Problem 

Clearly define the problem you're trying to solve and understand its context. Analyse the elements of the problem using a range of tried and tested tools.

Understand and overcome Cognitive Biases

Understand the top 5 cognitive biases so you can overcome these biases to enhance the effectiveness of your critical thinking and problem-solving.

Generate and Create Workable Solutions

Develop a range of potential solutions to the problem using a variety of techniques inspired by the Neuroscience of Creativity.

Evaluate your potential Solutions 

Critically evaluate the information you've gathered and identify patterns, relationships, and key factors. Assess the pros and cons of each solution and select the best option.

Implement and Measure the Success of your Solution

Put your chosen solution into action and track its progress. Evaluate the effectiveness of your solution and identify areas for improvement. Communicate that success.

Manage others through Problems and Solutions

Solving problems in teams can be challenging, but by understanding the emotionsof others when they feel stuck, you can unlock effective collaboration and drive succes.

Our workshop Concludes with the Bonus step 7: Manage your personal resilience. In this section of the course, we provide insights backed by the latest neuroscientific evidence to help you lower your frustrations and build and maintain your resilience. 


The workshop concludes with a review of the steps and tools covered and the development of a personal action plan.

Workshop Highlights

6 Models

In this workshop, we will explore a range of critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving models to enhance your analytical skills. We will delve into the VUCA model, which tackles volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity, and Carson's CREATES Model, a framework for cultivating personal creativity. You will also learn about Design Thinking, a human-centered approach to organisational innovation, and Miller's Innovation Model, which fosters a culture of continuous innovation, applicable to medium to large organisations. Additionally, we will cover the SARA Model of Change, which helps navigate emotional stages during organisational transformations, and the concept of Growth Mindsets, which emphasizes the importance of effort and a learning orientation in achieving success.

 8 Tools 

In this workshop, you can expect to learn at least 8 different critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving tools that will enhance your analytical skills and ability to tackle complex challenges. Specifically, you will be introduced to tools like 5 W's Mind Mapping, Root Cause Analysis, Fishbone Diagrams, 6 Thinking Hats, Risk Assessment, Delphi Technique, Force Field Analysis, and Metric Master KPI Dashboard Design. Additionally, you will learn various self-management strategies to maintain an optimal mental and emotional state, ensuring you are equipped to think clearly and effectively in a fast-paced environment. These strategies include the '3 Good Things' approach, which helps you focus on positive aspects and cultivate a growth mindset.

Backed by the latest evidence-based practice and Karen's extensive executive experience, you can expect a wealth of tips on how to best use the models and tools and even get some pointers on other resources to take your workshop learning further. Where else would you also learn about the worst cognitive biases to avoid if you want to succeed?This includes understanding how to recognise and overcome biases such as confirmation bias, sunk costs and availability bias, and overconfidence bias, which can hinder critical thinking and problem-solving.
